Large Royal Doulton salt-glaze stoneware jardiniere by Francis C Pope c1920. Relief decorated in geometric designs around its body and glazed in tonal blues. Incised Royal Doulton mark used 1902-1922 and number 8203. Mongram FCP for Francis C. Pope and EW for Emily Welch. The jardiniere measures 19 cm in height and 21 cm in diameter.

 

Francis C. Pope is one of Doulton's better known designers. He was a very versatile artist creating and executing various designs using tubelined, brush-lined and slip-cast methods as well as working with a number of different glaze finishes. Pope also modelled in teracotta, ornaments and architectural features such as medallions and portrait busts. He worked at Doulton from 1880 to 1925. Emily Welch worked at Doulton from 1879 to c1923 as Senior Assistant. For information on Royal Doulton visit our Maker's History pages.
