A quality sterling silver photograph frame by Stokes & Ireland Ltd 1916. The silver frame is of a rectangular form with broad, flat frame. The back with solid wood easel-type support and back cover secured corner and swivel tabs. The silver frame is of a good gauge of silver and is inset with a removable glass cover over navy blue moire lining. Hallmarked for the Chester Assay Office 1916 and for silversmiths Stokes & Ireland Ltd. The frame measures 23 cm by 18 cm. Aperture measures 20.25 cm by 15.25 cm.

 

The firm of Stokes & Ireland was formed by William Henry Stokes & Arthur George Ireland in 1872 based at Great Hampton Street, Birmingham. The partnership continued and they formed a limited company trading as Stokes & Ireland Ltd in 1892. The firm were manufacturers of silver household items such as tea-services, flatware, card cases and vinaigrettes. Stokes & Ireland Ltd were taken over by S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd in 1925.
