A 19th century original bronze Indian claw bell or elephant bell mounted on a carved padauk stand. As their name suggests - these were reputedly used on elephants either as a warning to pedestrians in crowded streets or to assist finding domesticated elephants when out grazing. Smaller decorated brass claw bells were latterly produced as adornments used during festivals and also as souvenirs. This original bronze elephant bell was most likely made in present day Uttar Pradesh where a number of towns specialised in their production. A weighty piece with a surprisingly splendid sound. Mounted on an intricately carved stand of padauk wood. Maximum height of stand is 34 cm. Base measures 29 cm by 14.5 cm. The bell is approximately 12 cm in diameter and 14 cm in height.
