An outstanding pair of Doulton Lambeth Art Nouveau stoneware vases by Eliza Simmance c1891. Baluster-form with cylindrical neck and everted rims. Beautiful Art Nouveau stylised foliate and floral design repeated around the body. Ochre-coloured body with fine tubelined detailing below a scrolling geometric design to the neck and dark olive-green rim. The design created by incised scroll lines with raised flower-heads. Beautiful and exceptionally well crafted design on these vases. Impressed Doulton Lambeth mark used from c1891. Signed with Eliza Simmance's monogram (E within an S), R for Louisa Russell and an unknown monogram. The vases measure 27 cm in height.

 

Eliza Simmance, one of the earliest artist engaged, worked at Doulton Lambeth as an Artist and Designer between 1873 and 1928. She quickly became recognised as an original and versatile designer - winning many high awards at international exhibitions. Her work remains highly collectible. Louisa Russell worked at Doulton as a Junior Assistant from 1882 to 1893 - dating these vases from between c1891 and 1893.
