An elegantly simple pair of sterling silver candlesticks by EJ Houlston Birmingham 1928. Square sconce integral to a square, ogee profiled capital. Capital supported on tapered square-form stem with inset canted corners. Stem raised on a square base with ogee moulding and canted corners. Loaded bases. Fully hallmarked for the Birmingham assay office 1928 and silversmith EJ Houlston. The candlesticks measure 15.5 cm in height.

 

Silversmith EJ Houlston based at Caroline Street in Birmingham was active during the first half of the 20th century. He first registered this hallmark at the Birmingham assay office in 1903. The firm produced household and personal items in silver such as card and cigarette cases, condiment sets, sauce boats, dishes, napkin rings. etc.
